Variety of Materials for Workstation Tops |
There is no single top material that is suitable for use in every department. Nevin planners recommend top materials that are appropriate for the work to be performed and your budget. |
Stainless Steel
Preferred in departments where tops are likely to be wet and dirty. Nevin stainless steel tops are seamless; sinks and backsplashes are welded into an integral unit. A raised marine edge keeps water on the top and prevents dripping on floors or cabinet fronts. The underside is sound deadened, and the top surface has a satin luster to minimize glare, resist scratches, and make maintenance easy.

¾" Corian®
Corian is a solid, non-porous homogeneous material composed of natural minerals and high-performance acrylic. Corian® is hard, stain resistant, and easy to keep clean. Because of its solid composition, color and pattern go all the way through. Surface abuse can usually be easily cleaned or repaired. Corian® is very stain resistant, but strong acids will damage the surface. Corian® should also be protected from high heat.

High-Pressure Plastic Laminate
An attractive top material in low stress work areas, Nevin high-pressure plastic laminate tops are post formed; tops and backsplashes are seamless with a raised rolled front edge. Post forming construction is more sanitary; seams that harbor microorganisms are eliminated. A wide variety of colors is available.

Soapstone
Soapstone has been used historically in laboratory applications due to its inherent properties: dense, nonporous, high resistance to chemical attack & staining, withstands high temperatures and no special coating or sealing is required. Countertop soapstone is dense and heavy but is a softer stone due to its talc content. However if necessary it is easily repairable and renewable using common tools and 80 grit sandpaper.

Epoxy Resin
Epoxy resin tops are also in daily use in laboratories throughout North America. Epoxy resin is desirable for surfaces that must have excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemical reagents. Heat and abrasion resistance of epoxy resin is good to fair. Material available in 3/4".

Colorlith®
Used is in daily use in thousands of labs throughout North America. The material is a combination of Portland cement and fillers. Charcoal gray color. Colorlith has excellent heat, abrasion, and chemical resistance to a wide variety of chemical reagents.
